THE PROLOGUE

All English scholars worth their salt will know

that just over six hundred years ago

a certain civil servant of that time

penned what is termed the ‘father of all rhyme’.

A simple story of a group of friends

who, quite by chance, when thrown together, spend

their time in merry company with stories

while on a journey in the Spring. What’s more is

that they were a diverse group of folk

in rank and reputation, yet each spoke

with their unique perspective from their lives.

This rich anthology of tales derives

from all of them together taking part

and Chaucer, cleverly, within this art

both entertains and then illuminates

for all of time, the medieval state

of life in England, not just of Royal Court

but people from backgrounds of any sort.
